For bicyclists, here’s your chance to get the Giro d’Italia experience right here in the U.S.A. The organizers of the Giro d’Italia are bringing the Giro to us, with Gran Fondo rides taking place in Pasadena, California the weekend on June 2nd. Pasadena, California, is best known throughout the world as the host of the annual Tournament of Roses Parade and Rose Bowl football game, and let’s not forget the Little Old Lady. But the City also boasts numerous cultural amenities, fine restaurants and top retailers. All this helps Pasadena live up to the true meaning of its name—the Crown of the Valley.
Get ready to roll and go: breathtaking views of the San Gabriel Valley are just the beginning, pedaling through cycling friendly towns like Claremont, Monrovia and Temple City, and wonderful reserves. Of the three courses offered (25, 68 and 94 miles with a maximum of 5134 vertical gain and 7.7 % max grade), some will be along the historic Route 66. Depending on the course you choose, the ride goes through the campus of Scripps and Pomona Colleges, past the Huntington Library and Botanical Gardens, and through some of the most beautiful communities in Eastern LA County. A destination of its own, Pasadena is a renowned bike-oriented city of sophisticated charm. Other cities included are: Arcadia-home of Santa Anita Park of Sea Biscuit fame, Azusa and Glendora-foothill communities in the San Gabriel mountains, La Verne-and a thigh-burning climb, Claremont-with its beautiful estates, Covina, San Dimas and the great regional Bonelli Park. Riders will also experience the alluring communities of Baldwin Park, Sierra Madre, Duarte, Irwindale, Pomona, El Monte, and San Marino. Gran Fondo Giro d'Italia Los Angeles - Pasadena offers a fairly urban experience and a great opportunity to ride the distance, getting the full flavor of a Giro d'Italia event.
After so many delightful sights, here comes the prize for the aching legs: Top Chef contestant Alex Eusebio will arrange an epicurean buffet which will include an assortment of pasta with distinctive flavors of different parts of Italy (farfalle al pesto from the Northern region of Liguria, Lasagna alla Toscana from the center, and Rigatoni alla Siciliana from the South), plus designer Panini, complemented by fresh salads. Uhm, che buono! The renewed Expo will offer enhanced Italian flair, offering the opportunity to indulge with genuine Italian gourmet tasting, authentic espresso, Italian soda and so much more.
