Post release services referral program bill SB 620 has been signed by Governor Newsom. The bill was suggested and sponsored by the Pasadena Police Department and would allow local law enforcement agencies to share access to helpful information to those under supervised release and help connect them directly with non-profit service providers. SB 620 would allow individuals to have their contact information released to non-profit providers as well as city and county services. It helps eliminate the gaps that currently exist between previously incarcerated community members and the service providers that assist in breaking the cycle of recidivism through case management, systems navigation, financial literacy, apprentice preparation, mental health, and substance abuse programming.

This information provides a greater awareness to the Pasadena community. The critical events detailed below are merely a snapshot of the one-thousand calls received to the Police Communications Center every day. As your police department moves forward under new leadership, the principles of the “Pasadena Way” possess greater significance no matter what assignment, function, or mission an employee serves in the organization as we continue to police with compassion and best intentions.
September 1, 2019, 8:36 p.m.: Officers responded to the area of Mentor Ave and Colorado Blvd on report of a street robbery. They located a victim on Mentor Ave, south of Colorado Blvd. The victim showed signs of intoxication and complained of pain to the right side of his head. Paramedics responded and transported him to a local hospital. The victim told officers that he had been approached by a male subject in the area of Lake Ave and Colorado Blvd. The suspect asked the victim for money and when the victim stated he had none, the suspect punched the victim on the right side of his head, rendering him unconscious. When the victim awoke, he was missing $500 from his wallet. Officers checked the area for possible suspects or witnesses but were unable to locate either.
September 2, 2019, 6:14 p.m.: Officer saw a suspicious vehicle in the area of Mountain St and Craig Ave. The officer and suspect vehicles were driving in opposite directions. As the vehicles passed each other, the officer recognized the driver as a local gang member. As the officer was making a U-turn, to further investigate, the suspect vehicle fled. The officer was unable to catch up to the suspect vehicle. Pasadena PD’s helicopter was in the immediate area and was able to see the suspect vehicle flee and eventually watched as the suspects abandon the vehicle on Craig Ave and run into an apartment building. A short time later, officers located the suspect. The driver, who had a warrant for his arrest, was arrested without incident.
September 2, 2019, 10:53 p.m.: Police and Fire Department personnel responded to the 500 block of N. Orange Grove Boulevard regarding a report of a traffic collision with injuries. Upon arrival, first responders found that a vehicle had collided with a metal pole on the east side of Orange Grove Boulevard between Rosemont Avenue and Pasadena Avenue. At the time of the collision, the vehicle was occupied by four male adults. Two of the men were transported to a local hospital and were admitted in stable condition. The remaining two men were pronounced deceased at the scene. No other vehicles were involved in the collision. The collision is currently being investigated by the Police Department’s Major Accident Investigation Team.
September 3, 2019, 12:21 a.m.: A pizza delivery driver was making a delivery at approximately 10:00 pm to an address in the area of Fair Oaks Ave and Pepper St when she was approached by two suspects who demanded her money. She said she did not have any money and the suspects then demanded her cell phone which she gave them. The suspects then walked westerly, out of sight. Due to a delay in the reporting of this crime, the suspects were not located.
September 3, 2019, 5:40 p.m.: Officers responded to the area of Fair Oaks Ave and Montana St regarding a street robbery. Upon arrival, the juvenile victim told officers that he was approached by two suspects. One suspects displayed a switchblade knife and attempted to pull off the victim's gold chain from around his neck. Ultimately, the suspects were able to take the victim’s chain and cell phone and fled eastbound on Montana St. After advising his mother of the robbery, the victim and his mother located the suspects in a nearby parking lot and attempted to get the items back. Police were eventually called. Officers responded and searched the area, however the suspects were not located.
September 4, 2019, 5:18 p.m.: Officers responded to a local hospital to speak with the victim of an assault. The victim stated his estranged wife drove to his residence in the 100 block of N. Mentor Ave to drop off belongings and while at the location, an argument ensued. The suspect got into her car and drove onto the victim’s yard. As the two were arguing, the suspect accelerated and ran over the victim. The victim was admitted to the hospital and was treated for non-life threatening injuries. The adult female suspect was not located by police.
September 5, 2019, 11:50 a.m.: Officers responded to the area of the 400 block of Sierra Madre Villa Ave regarding an armed robbery. The victim was gardening at a residence when the suspects approached him. One suspect pointed a gun at the victim while the other suspect grabbed the victim's lawn mower and placed it in the suspect's vehicle. The suspects both fled the area in a vehicle. After the information regarding the robbery was broadcast to other officers, an officer was sent to the 3000 block of Landfair Rd. regarding found property. Apparently a similarly described vehicle had speed through the area and a lawn mower fell out of the vehicle. After checking the area, officers were unable to locate the suspects. The victim identified the lawn mower as his and it was returned to him. The victim was not injured during this incident and the investigation is ongoing.
September 5, 2019, 3:13 p.m.: Pasadena Police Department’s dispatch center received several calls of shots fired in the area of Hammond St and Sunset Ave. When officers arrived, they encountered numerous uncooperative individuals. Officers continued their investigation and located the victim in an apartment in Kings Villages. It appeared as if the adult victim sustained a gunshot wound to his right foot. The victim was uncooperative and refused to be treated by Pasadena Fire Department. The victim ultimately had a friend drive him to a local hospital for treatment. Officers located evidence of a shooting in the area and forensic technicians responded for the collection of these items.
September 7, 2019, 8:30 p.m.: Officers conducted a traffic stop in the area of Fair Oaks Ave and Claremont St. When the officers contacted the adult male and female occupants and noticed a child sitting in the backseat. On the backseat, next to the child, was a handgun. Officers detained both adult occupants and they were arrested for possession of a handgun and child endangerment. The child was released to a family member.
September 7, 2019, 9:42 p.m.: A suspect entered a business located in the 600 block of N. Lake Ave. and approached the cashier. The suspect put a large paper bag on the counter and told the cashier to put all the money in the bag. The cashier called the supervisor to the front cash register and the supervisor emptied the contents of the register in the paper bag. The suspect fled the store east through the parking lot and was not locate.
September 9, 2019, 1:50 a.m.: Officers responded to the 100 block of E. Colorado Blvd regarding a suspect vandalizing the business. It was reported the suspect had shattered a window to the business. Officers located the suspect and detained him without incident. The suspect sustained a laceration to his forearm and he was treated by paramedics and was transported to a local hospital. Damage to the business was estimated to be in excess of $2,500. The suspect was arrested for Felony Vandalism.
September 9, 2019, 7:58 a.m.: Officers responded to the 800 block of N. El Molino Ave regarding an assault. The victim and one suspect were involved in a physical altercation as the result of an earlier disagreement. Another suspect remained in the suspect vehicle while the other two fought, however when the first suspect began to lose the fight, the suspect that remained in the vehicle, exited with a handgun, approached the two involved in the fight and ordered the victim to stop. The fight abruptly ended and the two suspects got back into the car and drove away. A search for the suspects was conducted but they were not located.
September 10, 2019, 5:10 p.m.: Officers responded to the 2000 block of El Sereno Ave in regards to a robbery. The victim stated as he walked on the eastside of El Sereno Ave near Montana Street, a Honda Accord pulled next to him and one of the occupants called him to the car. When the victim walked up to the car, the suspect pointed a handgun at the victim and exited the car. Once out of the car and while still pointing the gun, the suspect searched the victim’s pockets and removed the victim’s cell phone. The suspect returned to the vehicle and the car fled northbound on El Sereno Ave. The victim believed he heard a gunshot when the suspect re-entered the Honda but he was not certain.
September 12, 2019, 6:02 p.m.: Officers responded to a business in the 1100 block of E. Walnut St regarding the report of a customer being disruptive and threating the employees. As officers arrived, they saw the suspect with her hands around the security guard's neck. Officers were able to safely detain the suspect and continue their investigation. Officers subsequently learned the suspect threw a half full bottle of Bacardi at the employees and threatened to "shoot up" the location. The suspect was arrested for assault and making criminal threats.
September 13, 2019, 7:49 p.m.: Members of the Police Department’s Special Investigation Section (S.E.S) where conducting extra service patrols in the area of Hammond and Sunset. When Officers attempted to contact members of a group on Hammond St near Sunset Ave, several members of the group ran in different directions. Officers were able to detain 4 subjects which subsequently led to an arrest for a variety of violations including a parole violation, warrants, possession of narcotics and possession of a firearm.
September 14, 2019, 10:22 p.m.: Officers conducted a stop for a traffic violation in the area of Raymond Ave and Washington Blvd. During the vehicle stop, the officers noticed an open container inside the vehicle. A subsequent search of the vehicle revealed a firearm and a large amount of narcotics. All three occupants were arrested.
September 14, 2019, 11:22 p.m.: Pasadena Police responded to the area of Arroyo Blvd and Seco St regarding a physical altercation and shots fired. Officers arrived on scene and located two victims. Pasadena Fire Department paramedics arrived and transported both victims to a local hospital, one in stable condition and the second victim in grave condition. Despite the life-saving efforts of medical staff, one victim succumbed to his injury. The other victim continues to recover from a gunshot wound. Detectives responded to continue the investigation.
September 17, 2019, 9:57 p.m.: Officers were dispatched to a business near the 00 block of Colorado Blvd in Old Pasadena regarding two males who had just ran from the store after stealing merchandise. Simultaneously, a K9 officer was flagged down by an Old Town Guide who reported a male was seen running northbound through Miller Alley. Officers converged on the area and one of the suspects was taken into custody and found with $1,300.00 of loss in his possession. The suspect was identified as being the same suspect who was wanted by Pasadena PD Detectives, for a similar incident. The second suspect was not located.
September 19, 2019: Residential Burglary Detectives had received information regarding the identity of a suspect responsible for a burglary that had occurred on August 27, 2019 in the 2800 block of E. California Blvd. Officers and Detectives conducted a probationary search of the suspect’s residence. The suspect was arrested and admitted to the August burglary.
September 21, 2019, 7:49 p.m.: The victim in this case was jogging around the Rose Bowl when she was approached by a male subject who asked to jog with her. The female victim refused and continued to jog around the bowl. As the victim continued to run, she was approached from behind by the same male subject. The subject placed his arms around the victim and attempted to pull her backward. As the victim fell to the ground the suspect released his hold and ran from the location. PD arrived and located the male subject on the east side of the Rose Bowl. He was positively identified and taken into custody.
September 21, 2019, 8:43 p.m.: The victim, who is from North Carolina, rented a room at a local hotel located in the 100 block of S. Los Robles Ave and had made arrangements to meet a female, who he had met on a website, in his hotel room. The female arrived at the location and while inside the hotel room, took approximately $300.00 from the night stand. The female called someone on her cell phone and a few minutes later a male knocked on the victim's hotel room door. The victim answered the door and the male suspect appeared to brandish what the victim believed to be a firearm (later determined to be pepper spray). Both the female and male suspects fled the area. PPD officers were able to detain the suspects nearby and they were positively identified. Officers located and recovered the pepper spray.
September 22, 2019, 3:37 a.m.: Officers responded to the 100 block of S. Los Robles Ave regarding a person who was struck by a vehicle. The adult victim said a vehicle travelled south on Los Robles Ave. and stopped at Cordova St. A passenger exited the vehicle and engaged in an argument with the victim in the middle of the street. The driver of the suspect vehicle made a U-turn at Los Robles/Cordova; accelerated north on Los Robles on the wrong side of the roadway, struck the victim and fled the scene. The victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment of his minor injuries. The suspect vehicle was not located by officers.
September 22, 2019, 4:09 a.m.: Officers were flagged down in the area of Bonnie Ave and Colorado Blvd by a victim who stated he had been shot at by a suspect who was inside his vehicle. The driver’s door of the victim's vehicle was shattered. The victim explained that while driving in the area, the victim had pulled over to assist a male who had flagged him down. Suddenly, three additional men approached the victim's vehicle; one on the passenger side and two on the driver's side. All four suspects remained at the victim's vehicle. One suspect armed with a handgun, put his body through the window, told the victim not to move and struck him on the head with the gun. The victim said he heard a gunshot. The suspects entered the victim's vehicle, removed property and fled on foot. While canvassing the area, officers detained four suspects at a nearby apartment complex, who matched the description. After further investigation, one of the detained males admitted to the robbery. A search warrant was obtained and served at the apartment. Officers located several items that belonged to the victim, along with a BB-gun accessory inside. The suspects were arrested and transported to the PPD jail.
September 22, 2019, 2:41 p.m.: Officers were flagged down in the area of Fair Oaks Ave and Orange Grove Blvd regarding a suspicious person sitting in a vehicle, in a nearby parking lot. The person who reported the suspicious person expressed a concern that the vehicle’s occupant had been sitting in the car for the last several hours. Officers approached the vehicle and spoke to the single occupant, who immediately recognized him from prior contacts and were aware the person was currently on parole. Officers searched the vehicle and found a loaded firearm in the vehicle’s center compartment. Also recovered in the vehicle were items used in the commission of identity theft. The suspect was arrested for a felon in possession of a firearm and transported to the Pasadena jail.
September 22, 2019, 10:05 p.m.: Officers responded to a call of an automobile vs pedestrian injury traffic collision at the intersection of Washington Blvd and Raymond Ave. Officers arrived and found an adult in the road way with serious injuries. Paramedics responded and transported the victim to a local hospital where she ultimately succumbed to her injuries. The driver of the vehicle that struck the pedestrian remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation. The Pasadena Police Department’s Major Accident Team responded for the investigation.
September 24, 2019, 2:57 p.m.: Officers responded to the 700 block of E. Colorado Blvd regarding an individual possibly using a fraudulent credit/ATM card. When officers arrived, they located the suspect and began their investigation. The suspect was in possession of numerous credit cards and account information, which did not belong to him. As the officers were talking to the suspect, they saw another individual seated in a nearby car. Officers contacted the second suspect, who was a friend of the initial suspect. The second suspect was also in possession of stolen credit cards and stolen mail. The investigation lead officers to a motel in Glendale, where they located a "card reader" and more evidence of ongoing financial crime. Both suspects were arrested without incident.
September 27, 2019, 9:59 a.m.: The victim was riding his bicycle northbound on Sunset Ave. and as he was approaching Claremont Ave, he passed a group of males standing near a vehicle. The victim and the suspects exchanged some words. The suspects became verbally confrontational with the victim resulting in one of the males in the group pulling out a gun and firing rounds at the victim, striking him in the leg. The victim tried to run away, but due to his leg
injury, he collapsed in the street. The suspects fled east through the King's Villages apartment complex.
September 27, 2019, 9:59 a.m.: Officers responded to a report of an attempt robbery in the 100 block of S. Los Robles Ave. Officers contacted the victim who indicated a male approached her and asked if he could speak to her. As the victim turned to speak to the suspect, he sprayed her with what she thought was pepper spray and attempted to take her purse. The suspect pushed the victim to the ground and continued to pull on her purse. As passerby’s attempted to help, the suspect ran north on Los Robles Ave out of sight. The victim was able to give a detailed description of the suspect, who was later found and arrested at Memorial Park.
September 29, 2019, 3:42 a.m.: Officers responded to a report of an assault in the 500 block of North Los Robles Avenue. The adult victim called to state they had been struck in the head 3 times with a metal bottle. Upon arrival, officers contacted the suspect who was in the immediate are and still holding the metal bottle. The suspect was detained without incident. The victim was seen by the paramedics, but declined to be transported. The suspect was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon.
September 30, 2019, 2:49 p.m.: Officers responded to 1300 block of Riviera Dr regarding an armed robbery. The victim said he was walking home when he saw the suspect vehicle pass him. The driver of the suspect vehicle made a U-turn and waited as the victim approached. The suspects exited the vehicle and demanded that the victim give them his backpack. When the victim refused, one suspect pulled out a knife. The victim was in fear of his safety so he gave the suspects his backpack. The victim was not injured during this incident.
