PASADENA POLICE - COMMUNITY BRIEF August 2021

This information provides a greater awareness to the Pasadena community. The critical events detailed below are merely a snapshot of the calls received to the Police Communications Center every day. Your police department strives to better serve the Pasadena community. Under Police Chief John Perez, the principles of the “Pasadena Way” will forever have a lasting impact on all employees who serve in the organization, as we continue to police with compassion and best intentions.

August 7, 2021 at 1:33am: Pasadena Officers responded to the 600 block of Mar Vista Ave. regarding a call of shots fired in the area. Officers arrived on scene and saw evidence of a shooting in an apartment complex located along the 600 block of N. Mar Vista Ave. No victims were injured.

August 7, 2021 at 1:09pm: Pasadena Officers responded to the call of a robbery at a bus bench in the 800 block of N. Lake Ave. The victim was approached by the suspect, who asked to play the victim's guitar. The victim refused to allow the suspect to take the musical instrument, at which time the suspect displayed a firearm in his waistband and told the victim he was going to take it. The suspect took the loss and fled. Officers did not locate the suspect.

August 7, 2021 at 6:19pm: Pasadena Police Officers conducted a traffic stop of an illegally parked vehicle in the area of Fair Oaks Ave. and Peoria St. The driver was in possession of narcotics and cooperated with the officer’s request to exit the vehicle. During their contact with the vehicle’s occupants, it was learned the passenger possessed a firearm. Officers safely recovered the firearm and the passenger was arrested for the weapons violation as well as an outstanding warrant.

August 8, 2021 at 2:35am: Pasadena Officers responded to the 1100 block of S. Pasadena Ave. regarding an individual who was breaking windows of the residence while armed with a knife. Officers arrived on scene, contacted the suspect in front of the location, and quickly detained him. Upon further investigation, it was determined that the suspect was attending a family party when he became combative and family members forcibly removed him from the party.

August 8, 2021 at 4:59pm: Pasadena Officers responded to the 1700 block of El Sereno Ave. in regards to an assault. The victim was sitting in her backyard when the suspect (a family member) threw a rock at the victim, causing minor injury. The suspect fled the residence and was detained in the area by responding officers.

August 8, 2021 at 8:42pm: Pasadena Officers conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle for vehicle code violations in the area of Montana St. and Navarro Ave. Officers discovered the driver was on active parole, and the passenger a convicted felon. Both driver and passenger were detained. A search of the vehicle revealed a loaded firearm in the trunk of the vehicle. The firearm was an unregistered (Ghost gun) with an extended magazine. The driver and passenger were arrested and transported to the PPD jail for booking.

August 10, 2021 at 4:14pm: Pasadena Officers responded to the area of Lake Ave. and Belvidere St. regarding a disturbance involving a bus driver and a combative person attempting to enter the bus. Initially, the bus driver refused to allow entry to the subject, but did moments later. Once on the bus, the suspect continued to be combative and assaulted the driver. The suspect exited the bus and fled before officers’ arrival.

August 14, 2021 at 1:15am: Pasadena Officers responded to the area of Del Mar Bl. and Oak Knoll Ave. regarding a call of shots fired. The caller stated that a group of individuals were arguing next to a vehicle where the shots were heard. Officers arrived on scene and located the group and a vehicle. Evidence of a shooting was located in the middle of the street in addition to a firearm located in plain view underneath the vehicle in question. The suspect(s) responsible for the shooting were arrested and transported to Pasadena City Jail. No victims were injured.

August 14, 2021 at 10:52pm: Pasadena Officers were on routine patrol in the area of Hammond St. and Lincoln Ave. when they conducted a traffic stop for vehicle code violations. Officers contacted the driver, who exhibited signs of alcohol impairment. The investigation revealed the driver was under the influence of alcohol and was subsequently arrested for DUI. A firearm was located inside of the vehicle.

August 15, 2021 at 9:10pm: Pasadena Officers responded to the 1200 block of Summit Ave. regarding a verbal dispute between a male and female. Initial information provided to Pasadena Dispatch was that the male possibly had a BB gun. Officers arrived on scene and observed what appeared to be a weapon in the male’s pocket. The officers detained the male and recovered an actual firearm from the suspect without incident. No injuries occurred and the suspect was arrested for weapons charges.

August 16, 2021 at 15:18pm: Pasadena Officers responded to the 500 block of N. Garfield Ave. regarding to a residential burglary. The victim woke up when he heard a noise and found the suspect inside his bedroom. He told the suspect to leave his home. The suspect grabbed items of loss and left the house. Officers located and detained the suspect near the victim's residence. He was identified and arrested for residential burglary. The victim was not injured.

August 17, 2021 at 2:28am: Pasadena Officers responded to the area of Colorado Bl. and Hill Ave. regarding a victim with a gunshot wound. Officers contacted the victim and determined the shooting occurred in the area of Walnut St. and Harkness Ave. where evidence of a shooting was located. The victim stated a vehicle pulled up next to the victim and the occupants exited the vehicle. The victim continued past the vehicle, which would pass him moments later. As the vehicle passed him, he heard a gunshot and felt pain to his leg. The vehicle sped away as the victim fled to seek help. The victim was transported to a local hospital in stable condition.

August 18, 2021 at 6:04pm: Pasadena Officers responded to a residence in the 900 block of N. Los Robles Ave. regarding a woman heard screaming. It was determined two suspects known to the victim, had entered the victim’s residence and assaulted her and attempted to bind the victims with duct tape. The victim was able to get free and chased the suspects away. It is unknown the motive behind this incident as detectives are continuing their investigation.

August 19, 2021 at 1:57am: Pasadena Officers responded to a call of a single car collision involving a possible drunk driver. With the assistance of witnesses, the suspect and his vehicle were located and officers determined the driver was in fact, driving under the influence of alcohol. After the intoxicated driver was arrested, officers located a loaded handgun concealed in the vehicle.

August 20, 2021 at 3:23pm: Pasadena Officers were preparing to stop a vehicle for a vehicle code violation in the area of Lundy Ave. and Montana St. when a passenger quickly exited the moving car. A traffic stop of the vehicle was conducted while assisting units located the passenger who had fled from the vehicle. Additionally, while officers conducted their investigation, Pasadena Police Dispatch Center received calls from residents reporting a firearm was located in the street along the same route the vehicle had traveled. The weapon was recovered and follow-up investigation will be conducted to determine if the suspect possessed the discarded firearm.

August 21, 2021 at 5:48am: Pasadena Officers responded to the 100 block of Linda Vista Ave. to investigate a possible residential burglary in progress. The victim was awaken when he heard what sounded like rocks, hitting his bedroom window. Moments later, the suspect threw a larger rock at the front, glass door, causing significant damage. The resident confronted the suspect and a short altercation ensued. The suspect continued throwing rocks at the victim, but he eventually fled. Officers located and arrested the suspect a few blocks away. The resident was not injured during this incident.

August 26, 2021 at 4:18pm: Pasadena Officers were actively looking for an individual who was wanted in connection with a vandalism (graffiti) that had occurred at a local park. Officers saw the subject enter a bus. As the bus traveled the Pasadena area, officers continued to follow and the suspect exited in the 1800 block of N. Raymond Ave. As officers attempted to contact the individual, he fled on foot to a nearby residence. After an extensive search of the property and with the assistance of a K9, the suspect was taken into custody and a loaded handgun was recovered in the immediate area of where the suspect was hiding.

August 27, 2021 at 2:20am: Pasadena Police Department’s Emergency Dispatch Center received a call reporting a man who was armed with a gun, in the Old Pasadena area. The cooperative suspect was contacted in the area of Raymond Ave. and Union St. and found to be in possession of a firearm. The suspect was quickly taken into custody and the gun was safely recovered by officers. During their investigation, officers learned the suspect was a previously convicted felon and was currently on probation.

August 28, 2021 at 4:55am: Officers responded to the 800 block of N. Lake Ave. regarding a suspicious vehicle containing two sleeping men. It was further reported the male sleeping in the driver’s seat, was in possession of a firearm. The area was contained and officers confirmed the driver did have a firearm. Eventually, the occupants were awakened and ordered to exit the vehicle. At the direction of the officers, the driver left the firearm inside the passenger compartment, which was recovered once both occupants were detained. It was learned later that the driver was a convicted felon and he was arrested.

August 28, 2021 at 6:51pm: Pasadena Officers responded to the area of Belmont Ave. and Wyoming St. regarding shots heard and two vehicles seen leaving the area. A meager description was provided and no victims or suspects were located. Upon arrival officers, did find evidence of a shooting.

August 29, 2021 at 4:20am: Pasadena Officers responded to a residential burglary in the 1200 block of N. Raymond Ave. The suspect ransacked the victim’s unlocked vehicle, which was parked in the front driveway of the location. He then entered the victim’s residence through an unlocked door. The victim, who was asleep, was awaken by the sound of footsteps and yelled, causing the suspect to flee. The victim was not injured during this incident. There were several other similar incidents, which occurred in the same, immediate area. Detectives are actively investigating these burglaries.

August 29, 2021 at 6:52pm: Pasadena Officers responded to the 1800 block of Navarro Ave. regarding a male seen shooting at a passing vehicle. Officers responded to the location and found evidence of a shooting. Both the victim and suspect fled the area in vehicles prior to the arrival of responding units. Detectives are aggressively investigating this, as well as other recent shootings that have occurred in the immediate area.

August 29, 2021 at 9:16pm: Officers responded to a different report of numerous gunshots heard in the 1600 block of Navarro Ave. Upon arrival, officers located evidence of a shooting as well as one victim who sustained a gunshot wound injury. The victim was transported to the local hospital and his injuries are not considered life threatening. The victim was uncooperative and provided no additional information.

August 29, 2021 at 6:52pm: While investigating the previously mentioned shooting, officers heard more gunfire in the 1600 block of Navarro Ave. Officers responded to the area and located two female victims. Neither victim was harmed, but the vehicles they were driving were both struck multiple times by gunfire. As is the case in the previous shootings, detectives are investigating to determine if these shootings are related.

August 31, 2021 at 10:23am: Pasadena Police Department received multiple calls of "shots fired" from the 1300 block of Navarro Ave. When officers arrived, they located evidence of a shooting on Navarro Ave, but no victims or suspects were located. As officers began to investigate the shooting, PPD received a call from a local hospital advising a male in his 40's had arrived and was suffering from a gunshot wound. The injury was not believed to be life threatening and the victim refused to speak with officers once they arrived. Detectives are conducting additional follow-up to this incident.
