Pasadena Police Comunity Report for October, 2020

This information provides a greater awareness about Pasadena Police activity to the Pasadena community. The critical events detailed below are merely a snapshot of the calls received to the Police Communications Center every day. As your police department continues to move forward under Police Chief John Perez, the principles of the “Pasadena Way” possess greater significance no matter what assignment, function, or mission an employee serves in the organization as we continue to police with compassion and best intentions.

October 4, 2020, 10:48 a.m.: Officers responded to a suspicious person in the 1600 block of Hastings Heights Lane. The suspect was in the rear yard of a residence and was attempting to open a back door. When officers arrived, the suspect fled on foot and jumped into a nearby basin and ran down the adjoining wash. Officers tracked the suspect for approximately 6.5 miles and he was eventually taken into custody once officers were able to access the wash. Upon contact, the suspect refused to cooperate with the officers and a struggle ensued. Both the officers and suspect sustained minor injuries as a result of struggling with officers as they attempted to take him into custody. The suspect was eventually arrested for attempted burglary and other charges. The officers and suspect were treated for their minor injuries.


October 4, 2020, 10:55 a.m.: Officers responded to 200 block of Ohio St. regarding a man who attacked a female with a sword. Upon their arrival, officers found that the suspect was being detained by a neighbor who had come to the aid of the initial victim. Officers quickly took the suspect into custody and located a long metal fencing foil (a sword used in the sport of fencing) nearby. The suspect, who also lives in the immediate area, appears to suffer from a mental condition as it was reported this was not the first incident between the two neighbors. Both the female victim and the neighbor who had come to her aid, sustain minor injuries as a result of the altercation. Neither victim required immediate medical aid and the suspect was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon.


October 5, 2020, 6:17 p.m.: Officers responded to a local hospital after the emergency room medical staff reported a gunshot victim was dropped off in critical condition. Officers began to investigate and quickly learned the victim was likely involved in a car to car shooting in the City of Los Angeles. The Los Angeles Police Department was notified and responded for the investigation.


October 5, 2020, 10:26 p.m.: Officers were on patrol in the area of Fair Oaks Ave. and Washington Blvd. when they heard several gunshots. Shortly after hearing the gunshots, Pasadena Police Department’s Dispatch Center began receiving multiple calls of shots being fired and officers were directed to the area of Hammond St. and Fair Oaks Ave. where officers located over 30 shell casings and some projectiles in the street. There were no reports of anyone struck or injured as a result of the gunfire. Local hospitals were checked for persons who may have sustained gunshots wounds, but none were reported. There is no suspect information and Detectives are continuing their investigation.


October 6, 2020, 8:07 p.m.: Officers responded to a business in the 3000 block of E. Colorado Blvd. regarding an armed robbery. The suspect had entered the business, pointed a firearm at the employee and demanded money. The victim complied and gave the suspect cash from the register. The victim was not injured during the robbery and the suspect fled from the location after receiving the U.S. currency. Detectives are investigating to determine the suspect’s identity.
October 6, 2020, 9:35 p.m.: Officers responded to the area of Hammond St. and Sunset Ave. to investigate the report of shots fired. Several callers heard approximately five to ten shots. Preliminarily, the investigation revealed an individual on a mini bike was shot at by the occupants of a passing car, as the rider of the mini bike travelled east on Hammond St. Evidenceof a shooting was located but no victims or suspects were found. This shooting remains under investigation.


October 8, 2020, 8:52 p.m.: Officers conducted a traffic stop of a vehicle in the area of Cedar St. and Navarro Ave. During the stop, the officers noticed an open container of alcohol in the passenger compartment. The driver, who was on active parole, gave consent to search the vehicle at which time the officers located a loaded handgun in the car. Both occupants were arrested and transported to the Pasadena City Jail.


October 8, 2020, 9:16 p.m.: Officers were patrolling the 1000 block of Sunset Ave. in response to the numerous shootings that had occurred in the area. During their patrols, officers saw a person standing in a nearby driveway who they recognized as a being wanted for a recent incident where the suspect had fled in a vehicle, from police. As the Officers walked towards the suspect, he took a fighting stance. Commands to cooperate were given by officers, but as they attempted to handcuff the suspect, the suspect struck an officer in the face. A struggle ensued and the suspect was eventually taken into custody. Both officers sustained minor injuries as a result of the fight.


October 9, 2020, 5:55 a.m.: Officers responded to a local hospital regarding a possible stabbing victim. Upon arrival, the intoxicated victim stated he was attacked by 3-4 suspects in the 200 block of N. Altadena Dr. During the fight, the victim claimed he was stabbed in the head. Officers searched the area described, in an attempt to determine the location of the stabbing. Based on the information provided, it is believed the incident occurred in the parking lot of local business however, there was no evidence of a stabbing located. The victim’s injuries were not life threatening.


October 10, 2020, 1:12 a.m.: Officers responded to a report of suspicious subjects in a vehicle parked illegally in the 400 block of S. Los Robles Ave. Officers contacted the vehicle’s four occupants and discovered none of them were residents of the area. Further investigation revealed three of the occupants had outstanding arrest warrants. Upon arrest, a search of the vehicle revealed numerous items of stolen mail and packages. Additionally, burglary tools were also located, indicated the subjects were involved in area burglaries and thefts. All four suspects were arrested for burglary, identity theft, receiving stolen property and possession of burglary tools.


October 10, 2020, 2:20 a.m.: Officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop for a suspected drunk driver at Raymond Ave. and Tremont St. The suspect failed to stop and led officers on a brief pursuit. The suspect eventually stopped in the area of Highland St. and Santa Rosa Ave. but immediately fled on foot from the vehicle. Officers quickly caught the suspect and took him into custody. The suspect was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence and attempting to evade officers in a vehicle.


October 11, 2020, 3:33 a.m.: Officers were on patrol when they observed a vehicle in the area of Colorado Blvd. and Craig St. with a license plates that did not belong to the vehicle. A traffic stop was initiated and upon contact with the occupants, it was discovered the driver was on probation and driving with a suspended license. The female passenger (the driver’s wife) had visible injuries and it was apparent to officers that she had recently sustained an assault. The investigation revealed the couple were traveling to the Pasadena area from Central California. During their trip, the victim and husband were involved in an argument which lead to a physical assault. It was also learned the suspect had made several threats to kill his wife with a knife he possessed. The victim’s


injuries required medical attention. Paramedics responded and transported the victim to a local hospital while the suspect was arrested for domestic violence, false imprisonment and criminal threats.


October 15, 2020, 3:28 a.m.: Officers responded to a call of shots fired in the area of Marengo Ave. and Penn St. The victim stated the suspect(s) had shot from a vehicle. Officers arrived and discovered evidence of a shooting and fortunately, no one was injured. During their initial investigation, patrol officers located the suspect’s vehicle, which was unoccupied. The suspect(s) was/were not located and Detectives are continuing their investigation into this incident.


October 16, 2020, 1:16 a.m.: Officer responded to a local hospital in regards to a victim who had been transported by Pasadena Paramedics, after suffering an apparent overdose. The victim was discovered unconscious and not breathing in the area of the 700 block of N. Lake Ave. Paramedics administered Narcan to the victim and transported him to the hospital. The victim regained consciousness and stabilized after the Narcan was administered.
October 16, 2020, 1:43 a.m.: Pasadena Police Department received a call regarding a 3 year old who was found wandering on the sidewalk, in the area of Wilson Ave. and Yolo St. Because of the time of morning, there was obvious cause for concern. Officers canvassed the area for a parent or responsible adult but were unable to locate anyone responsible for the child. The child was driven around in an attempt for her to point out her home, but the toddler was unable to provide the necessary information. Once they awoke, the parents immediately realized the child was missing and contacted police. The child appeared to have left the family residence on her own and was in good health.


October 16, 2020, 10:11 a.m.: Officers conducted a traffic stop of a vehicle in the 600 block of N. Lake Ave. Upon contacting the driver, the officers smelled a strong odor of marijuana emitting from the vehicle. The driver, who was on active probation and has a “search and seizure” condition as part of his probation, was asked to exit the vehicle so that a search of the vehicle could be conducted by officers. During the search of the car, a loaded handgun was recovered and the driver was arrested. The driver, who was cooperative with officers, was subsequently transported and booked into to the Pasadena Police City Jail.


October 18, 2020, 4:50 a.m.: Officers responded to a call of a woman screaming for help in the area of Mountain St. and Raymond Ave. As the officers arrived, they saw several subjects, including a female, in the immediate area. Officers attempted to talk to the group to ascertain what was occurring. One of the males in the group began to distance himself from everyone else and ran when an officer approached him. The officers gave chase and observed the male throw a firearm into a nearby yard. The suspect was caught a short time later and the discarded gun was recovered from the yard. The suspect was arrested and booked at the Pasadena City Jail. Later, he was released with a citation to return to court at a later date.
October 19, 2020, 11:18 a.m.: Officers conducted a traffic stop of a vehicle at Fair Oaks Ave. and Peoria St. Officers discovered the suspect was unlicensed. Officers conducted a search of the vehicle prior to it being impounded and discovered a loaded, un-serialized firearm in the trunk. The driver was arrested for possession of an illegal firearm.


October 19, 2020, 3:48 p.m.: Officers received information that a suspect, who was wanted in connection with possessing a firearm, was in the area of Washington Blvd. and Hill Ave. A traffic stop of the vehicle the suspect was believed to be riding in, was conducted at Corson St. and Hill Ave. The wanted suspect was located in the rear seat wearing a wig and a silicon head mask in an attempt to disguise his identity. The suspect cooperated with officers and was arrested. A loaded firearm was recovered from his waistband.


October 19, 2020, 7:48 p.m.: Officers responded to a call of 30 shots fired in the area of Raymond Ave. and Washington Blvd. Upon arrival, Officers discovered evidence of a shooting and saw a vehicle leaving the area at a high rate of speed. A traffic stop was conducted and the solo occupant was found to be suffering from a gunshot wound. A second victim, who was in the immediate area of the adjacent park, was dropped off at a nearby fire station with a gunshot wound. Both victims were transported to a local hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries. Detectives are continuing their investigation into this incident.


October 22, 2020, 9:25 p.m.: Officers were alerted to possible narcotic activity in the area of Arroyo Pkwy. and Del Mar Blvd. A vehicle believed to be involved in the illicit activity, was stopped and a probation search was conducted on the vehicle. A large amount of narcotics were discovered in the vehicle and further investigation lead to the search of the suspects' hotel room where a loaded handgun, US currency and drug paraphernalia were located and seized as evidence.


October 23, 2020, 6:14 p.m.: Officers responded to the 800 block of Las Palmas Rd. after receiving a report of a burglar who had been confronted by a resident, inside the house. Officers located the suspect on a bike near El Circulo and Linda Vista Ave. The suspect was detained and discovered to be in possession of the victim’s property. It was also learned the suspect was on active probation for robbery and had prior arrests for burglary. The suspect was arrested for residential burglary and transported to the Pasadena City Jail.


October 23, 2020, 11:28 p.m.: Fire, Paramedic and Police personnel were summoned to the 700 Block of E. Washington Blvd. regarding a report of an injury traffic collision. The collision involved a SUV which had reportedly collided with a pedestrian. The pedestrian was crossing Washington Blvd. when the collision occurred. The pedestrian sustained fatal injuries as a result of the collision, and was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver of the SUV remained at the scene of the collision and alcohol appears to be a contributing factor in the incident. The driver was arrested and booked at the Pasadena City Jail. The Police Department’s Major Accident Investigation Team responded to conduct the investigation.


October 26, 2020, 6:57 p.m.: Officers responded to a report of a carjacking that occurred in the 200 block of Carlton Ave. The victim, who was visiting a friend in the area, had parked and was seated inside of his vehicle in front of his friend’s residence when he a vehicle with three occupants pulled up alongside of him. All three occupants were in possession of firearms and demanded the victim exit his vehicle. After being assaulted, the suspects took money from the victim’s pocket and stole his vehicle. The victim’s vehicle was later recovered in the City of Long Beach but none of the suspects were located. The victim sustain only minor injuries as a result of the assault.


October 27, 2020, 8:54 p.m.: A trouble unknown call was received involving a woman heard screaming in distress from the 1000 block of Bella Vista Ave. When officer contacted the female, she informed them she heard a gunshot and found her husband inside their residence and was apparently injured from a gunshot wound. She could not provide any details as she stated she and her husband had been in a physical altercation before she heard the gunshot and she had lost consciousness after being strangled by her husband. The husband was pronounced deceased and Detectives responded for the investigation.


October 28, 2020, 9:31 p.m.: Officers responded to a fight call in 100 block of W. Hammond St. When police personnel arrived, there was no active fight, however a victim was located in the area. The victim advised officers that while he and some friends were sitting in a car, they were approached and challenged to fight by a large group of suspects. The victim had engaged in a fight with one of the suspects but was then assaulted by multiple suspects. During the assault, one suspect produced a handgun and pistol whipped the victim while the other suspects took U.S. currency from his pants pockets. The victim was not seriously injured and the suspects were not located.


October 30, 2020, 9:31 p.m.: Officers were advised of an assault that had occurred the previous day, in the 400 block of N. Los Robles Ave. The victim had sustained multiple injuries as a result of the assault and was admitted to a local hospital. The victim informed officers he is homeless and was sleeping near a local park when an unknown suspect approached him and demanded his property. Before the victim could give the suspect what he demanded, the suspect struck him several times with a bat, causing the injuries. This investigation is continuing
